How a failing pump, motor or shaft seal shows itself

Most pump trouble announces itself before the pump quits. Water dripping from the seam where the pump housing meets the motor usually points at the shaft seal, the small spring-loaded part that keeps water off the motor bearings. Air bubbling in the strainer basket means the suction side is pulling in air, and the suspects are the lid o-ring, the basket gasket and the fittings on the pipe leading in.

A motor that hums and won't turn is a different complaint from one that screams. Humming points toward a motor that can't start, a screaming or grinding noise points toward worn bearings. A seal that weeps for a season and then lets go is the classic way a motor gets ruined, so a small drip is worth a phone call.

None of that needs a diagnosis from a website. It needs you to notice which of those things is happening, and to say so when you ask.

Bring the old part, or a photo of the label plate

Pumps and motors wear a label plate, and that plate carries the model number, horsepower and voltage. Pull your phone out and photograph it before you come in, or carry the old seal or o-ring in a bag. A part held up against a part, or a model number read off a plate, settles the question faster than a description of a pump you remember as blue.

Kill the breaker to the pump before you open anything, and keep the old hardware together so nothing walks off between the pad and the truck. Seal kits are small and easy to lose.

Hayward, Polaris, Pentair, Jandy, and ordering what isn't on the shelf

The store's own site names Hayward, Polaris, Pentair and Jandy as the lines it works with, alongside pumps, motors and seal kits. If you already know what your equipment is, say the brand and the model when you call and ask about that part.

When the part you need isn't on hand, ordering is part of the conversation. One Google reviewer, Felicia Flournoy, put it this way: “Tammy was very helpful with ordering the equipment I needed. Friendly and knowledgeable.”

Call (470) 945-4340 with the brand, the model and what the pump is doing, and ask before you drive out to US-19.
